The Viking Ship Museum – Roskilde, Denmark  

Located right outside Copenhagen proper in the town of Roskilde, the Viking Ship Museum houses — you guessed it — Viking warships. Five (relatively) well-preserved Viking ships were excavated from nearby Skuldelev after the Vikings deliberately sunk them in the Roskilde Fjord to block the waterway in an effort to prevent enemy attacks in the year 1070. Their loss is our gain, as the frigid fjord water did an exceptional job slowing the rate of decay; they don’t look a day over 500 years old. This exclusive peek back in time at the craftmanship is the central theme of the museum; expect to find plenty of education dedicated to archaeology and shipbuilding. Kids will delight at the chance to take to the water in traditional vessels and try their hand at rowing.
